Daytrip 4: Citytrip Nice

The elegant seaside resort Nice has been popular since the end of the 19th century due to its beauty, lively boulevard and beaches, unique historic buildings, many excellent museums, and its exceptionally beautiful climate. World-famous is the 7 km long Promenade des Anglais and the colorful daily market Cours Saleya.

Shopping on the Promenade des Anglais

Enjoy the lively atmosphere on the Promenade des Anglais, the beautiful wide boulevard lined with flowers along the Baie des Anges, where joggers, skaters and couples in love pass by. Even in winter, the terraces here are delightful. On one side you’ll find the many pebble beaches, and on the other side elegant luxury hotels, including the famous Hôtel Negresco.

Soak up the atmosphere in 'Le Vieux Nice'

Strolling along the Promenade des Anglais, you’ll naturally arrive in Le Vieux Nice, the old town of Nice, where you’ll find unique historic buildings and many charming squares with lively terraces. At the daily market Cours Saleya, you can still experience the atmosphere of old Nice. Once a week, on Mondays, the famous antique and brocante market is held here — definitely worth a visit!

The old town is also full of lovely little curiosity shops. For antiques, it’s best to walk towards the harbour. In the La Buffa district near Place Masséna, you’ll find more upscale boutiques featuring well-known brands.

    Lunch in the harbour

The cuisine of Nice is influenced by both Provençal and Italian traditions. Typical local specialities include pissaladière (an onion tart with anchovies and olives), ratatouille, pan bagnat (bread filled with vegetables) and salade niçoise, all generously drizzled with olive oil and garnished with small black olives.

Be sure to dine at Le Bistrot d’Antoine (reservations recommended!). In the trendy clubs along the Promenade des Anglais and around the harbour, you can also enjoy the vibrant nightlife of Nice.

    Museum tips

After Paris, Nice has the largest number of museums in France. Our favourite museums include the Musée d’Art Moderne et d’Art Contemporain, which offers an extensive overview of contemporary art. At the Musée des Beaux-Arts, you’ll find artworks from the 18th to the 20th century. Also well worth a visit are the beautiful Musée National Marc Chagall and the Musée Matisse, located in the striking red Villa des Arènes.

And the best part: all city-run museums are free to visit!
